Jon & Ben’s Meat-tastic Spag Bol

Jon & Ben's Meat-tastic Spag Bol
pinit

This recipe is the first from the Friends & Family cookbook one of my bridesmaids made for me as a gift before our wedding last year. It’s literally the cutest thing I own. It’s full of adorable family recipes, some a little weirder than others…

This one is a trust the process kind of recipe – don’t skip the Pepperami (at least not the first time you make it…) and if you’re not drunk by the time you’re eating, you’ve done it wrong.

It’s our friends Ben and Jon’s meat-tastic bolognese sauce – and if you think it’s just like any other bolognese sauce, then you are very much mistaken. I advise you follow exactly for the full effect.

My drink of choice was a maple spiced Old Fashioned.

Enjoy!

Instructions

Making the sauce

  1. Have a couple of drinks before you start (makes the cooking less stressful).
  2. Chop the Pepperamis into (thin) slices.
  3. Chop the ham hock (coz it always comes out of the packet like a process gammon joint).
  4. Dice the onion (like really small pieces coz chunks of onion is gross)
  5. Brown the mince in a frying pan with a little bit of oil, adding the onion mid-way though.
  6. Add the Pepperami, ham hock & tomato puree and fry for a few mins.
  7. Make another drink.
  8. Add the Dolmio, chopped tomatoes and simmer for 10 mins (stirring when you remember).
  9. Add the ketchup, pepper, salt, garlic powder and stir (try not to splash everything over the hob...or just hope someone else is on cleaning duty).
  10. Simmer for another 15 minutes on a low heat.
  11. Make another drink.
  12. Serve with way too much cheese and all of the carbs you can find in the fridge/freezer coz now you're starving. Oh and if Ben is over for dinner, cover the whole thing is sweet chilli sauce (as with every meal).
